Winter Prep
|
Winterization is important especially up north! Choosing to shut down your pond or keep it open is up to you. If you are north of Arkansas we would recommend shutting it down. That being said many people keep them open all year. This picture is of a pond in St. Louis in January it runs all year!
Keeping your pond open We recommend the following
-
Building your pond with FreezeFlex Pipe it can be frozen solid without bursting.
-
Get a deicer. to keep a hole in the ice. if the pond freezes over and your waterfall keeps pumping you will pump all your water out of the pond.
-
Remove pump from skimmer and place in the bottom of the pond.
-
Keep an eye on the water level as ice forms on the waterfall you loose the water in your pond.
-
Be prepared to hook up a line to run water to your pond in the ice cold weather. then unhook it and store hose till you need it again.
-
Auto fills need to be winterized.
-
Do not try to feed fish.
If you plan on shutting your pond down we recommend the following:
-
Remove pump and store in a bucket of water in the garage or basement.
-
Winterize pipes and auto-fills.
-
Winterize waterfall filter or pressurized filter.
-
Use a deicer, pump, or air pump to keep a hole in the ice.

Air Pumps and De-icers: keep a hole in the ice in order to release harmful gasses from the pond
Air pumps provide needed oxygen to the pond during winter and the bubbles help keep the pond from freezing over. Remember air pumps can cool the water so do not put the airstons at your deepest point.Put it 2/3rds of the way down and you will not cool the deeper warmer water ware the fish are staying.

| Deicers are controlled by a thermostat and turn on when the temperature falls close to freezing level. They plug in and float in the pond keeping a small hole in the ice. We recommend the ice chaser for colder climates and the saucer for the milder climates. Do not put heaters in skimmers or next to plastic they can melt them.
